want him out. a group rallying today urging san jose council member omar torres to leave office or face a recall. this, following an investigation into sexual misconduct with a minor. good afternoon. i'm audrey asistio. welcome to nbc bay area news at 4:30. our ian cull will be joining us in just a little bit with more on that group's demands. other stories we're tracking on this friday. shaking up the robotaxi business. huge round of funding for waymo. business and tech reporter scott budman will be telling us how the company plans to spend that money. plus, less than two weeks away from the election. and if you haven't already, now is the time to think about how you're going to cast your ballot. the way san francisco is helping its voters manage the polls and climate change is a priority for a lot of first time voters. how their ballots could be a decision maker in the race for president. but let's begin with a call for a recall for today san jose city councilman omar torres. and it comes from
4:32 pm
community leaders and people who live in his district. the councilman has missed all city meetings since becoming the subject of a police investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct with a child. nbc bay area's ian cull joins us now. all right. ian, so we've heard the mayor and the council ask for him to resign, but they say if he doesn't, the only other option at this point would be voters to decide to recall him. yeah, exactly. audrey and a group started the process to do just that today, formally launching a recall campaign. the lead organizer is the deputy chief of staff for mayor of matt mahan, but says he's doing this only as a concerned citizen. he and other recall organizers from district three say they're fed up with councilman omar torres absences from city meetings since the beginning of the month. they also say the allegations against him are and he should be removed from office. those allegations began when torres told police he was being extorted by a man he had a previous relationship
4:33 pm
with. that man then claimed their relationship began when he was a minor. court documents also show graphic text messages between the two, where torres talked about sexual acts with a different 17 year old. we demand councilmember torres resign. we demand representation and to see it through. we are moving forward with a recall. the behavior is not okay. we don't feel comfortable hosting meetings with his name stamped on there. he has a lot of personal obligations going on outside of work, and he cannot focus on the city. he cannot focus on this district. looks like a lot of people are trying to get their voices heard. ian. so what happens now? so to start a recall, organizers must gather 250 signatures from qualifying district residents. next, they'll need to serve the councilman with their intent to recall him. then the campaign will need to collect nearly 5300 signatures and have them verified by the registrar to trigger a recall election. they hope to have the recall on the ballot by early next year. a
4:34 pm
colleague of torres on the council applauded their effort. this is an absolutely right thing to do that our citizens are sick and tired of, councilmember torres. and we should note, as of today, torres has not been arrested or charged with any crime. his attorney has not returned our request for comment on the recall action. we'll have more details coming up in our full story at 6:00. all right. we'll see you at six. ian, thanks so much. the mcdonald's e coli outbreak is now expanding to more states. yesterday we showed you the ten states impacted. today, the cdc said that there are now 75 confirmed cases across 13 states. the outbreak started in late september. customers reported feeling sick after eating mcdonald's quarter pounders. one person did die. 22 others have been hospitalized. cdc connected the outbreak to slivered onions served on burgers. mcdonald's confirmed that the onions were supplied by taylor farms, which is based in salinas, california. we told you

about told you about this yesterday. chain has since pulled the item from the menu. it is already facing lawsuits from sick customers. a man is in the hospital after being stabbed in san francisco. it happened on mission and 11th street just before noon today. you're looking at citizen app video of police cars surrounding a muni bus. sfpd says when officers arrived, the man was suffering from a stab wound. he was taken to the hospital. no word yet on his condition. no arrests have been made, but police are asking anyone with information to contact them. a deadly crash in the east bay shut down a busy interstate for a few hours. the chp says the accident happened on northbound 680. but first, we want to take you to nbc and a special report. this is an nbc news special report. here's lester holt. good evening. we're coming on the air with breaking news and what appears to be a major escalation in the middle east. tonight, iranian state tv
4:36 pm
is reporting there have been explosions on targets in tehran. it comes just weeks after iran launched a direct missile attack on israel. this escalation comes amid growing concerns about a wider all out war breaking in the region. i want to bring in our pentagon correspondent, courtney qb. courtney, what are you hearing from there? yeah, so this is something that we've been waiting for, for several weeks now. and this is israel and israeli military response to the large scale attack by iran. several weeks ago on israel. now, the iran on that night launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles towards israel, several of them striking. fortunately, the majority of them were able to be intercepted by the israeli military with some help from the u.s. military. but since then, we have been hearing from u.s. and israeli officials that a response was coming. well, that seems to be what is now underway. the israeli defense forces now confirming that they are conducting conducting precision strikes against iran
4:37 pm
now, in a statement from the idf, they are saying this is not only in response to that attack several weeks ago by iran, but this is for is in a response or a retaliation for the dozens and dozens of attacks that they say they have been suffering from. iran and iranian proxies since october 7th. now, of course, we have now seen several cases where israel and iran have launched projectiles, missiles, drones and other projectiles and weapons back and forth between one another. back in april, we saw hundreds of projectiles fly from iran towards israel again. in that case, the vast majority were knocked down. israel, responding with several strikes up towards iran's nuclear facilities. now that seemed to end. the direct back and forth between iran and israel, and instead, in those months between april and now, we saw the majority of the attacks came through those proxy networks. so
4:38 pm
we're talking about hezbollah from iran, hezbollah in iraq and in syria. and then, of course, the houthi rebels in yemen. but then in july, after a series of israeli assassinations, the back and forth started again. and then, of course, when israel assassinated hassan nasrallah, it all ticked up again. so the big question here is, lester, what is israel's targeting tonight? now, u.s. officials have told us that they expect the majority of the targeting to be against iranian military sites. but of course, there is always the possibility that israel could also go after some of iran's energy facilities. so things like their oil and gas fields, the sorts of targets that would not necessarily be military related but could have a direct impact on iran's economy. it stands to see it still stands to reason. we have to see exactly what they're targeting tonight. but according to u.s. officials who i will say we have been asking about this every single day since iran fired off those ballistic
4:39 pm
missiles against israel several weeks ago. we have been asking, and we keep hearing one consistent thing. the expectation is israel will respond. they will retaliate, and they will go after iranian military targets. lester courtney, the u.s, as you recall, used some of its interceptors to take down some of those iranian missiles that hit israel a couple of weeks ago. do we know if there's an american involvement tonight? we don't know as of now that does not look to be the case. but this is all really developing quickly here. now, the u.s. has not only maintained that presence of air defense systems, most of those coming from the maritime. several weeks ago. so this was the u.s. navy firing off interceptors from some of their ships in the mediterranean to stop some of those incoming iranian ballistic missiles. but since that time, the u.s. has added another very powerful capability in the form of a thad air defense system. now that moved into israel over the course of about two weeks, the
4:40 pm
interceptors are there. these are the reason that these are so critical to israel's defense right now, lester, is because they they they target an incoming projectile, in most cases, a missile in the terminal phase of its, of its firing. so that's as it is literally heading straight in the last moments before a missile will impact in israel. the thad will launch off and fire it off. it's what the military calls a kinetic kill vehicle. that means it's an interceptor that fires up. it doesn't have a warhead on it. it literally slams into an incoming missile and then it causes the missile to essentially blow itself up with just that kinetic force. the u.s. has moved that thad interceptor the battery into israel, so that should. in fact, if this becomes another tit for tat in the coming hours or even days, israel will have even more air defense systems in place for a possible iranian response here. all right, courtney, we'll ask you to stand by. for those
4:41 pm
just joining us, we're following events right now in iran, where explosions have been reported. according to state tv, they're widely thought to be part of a retaliation by israel against iran. i want to go to matt bradley now. he's in beirut. what is the anticipation of what comes next in lebanon? yeah, i mean, all of this is about anticipation, right, lester? i mean, the fact is, is that we're talking about israeli attacks against iran, and this is when we when we talk about this idf statement, they're talking about iran's proxies. and that is one of the main proxies. that is here in lebanon. hezbollah and the israelis have expanded their front against hezbollah here for the past month. they've been relentlessly attacking hezbollah targets here. and the question is whether or not these attacks by israel against iran are going to metastasize to encompass the entire region. and whether or not this is going to really work into an entire region wide war. and that is the real concern
4:42 pm
here. that's one of the things that american diplomats have been working so hard over the past several weeks to try to avoid, to try to get the entire region to step down from a region wide war. now they've been trying to tell the israelis to try to stop from, you know, making this into a region wide war. but the fact is, is that the main cat's paw of the iranians is here in lebanon. and this is why the israelis have been launching a ground invasion of lebanon. and that has been, you know, obviously killing so many people in this region, especially here in lebanon. and so we're trying to see whether or not this is going to be a war that is going to be worked through. the iranians themselve, or whether or not this is going to be more of a symbolic attack. as we saw back in april, when there was more of a tit for tat between the iranians and the israelis, and both sides were able to climb down with kind of a face saving maneuver, whether there was more of a symbolic attack. this is now going to be a question of whether or not proxy groups here in lebanon,
4:43 pm
iraq, syria, as we heard from courtney kube in yemen and other places throughout the middle east, are going to now be engaged in fighting against the israelis that is going to determine where this war goes from here. lester and matt, whether we call this the wider war or not, the fact is that israel is fighting right now on three fronts in gaza, in beirut, and now this attack, which may be limited, but nonetheless, it is a third front for israel. yeah, this is the third front. the israelis, in their statement today called this the seventh front. i mean, they've been calling this they've been saying that they've been fighting on seven fronts. this is really the main front here. when we talk about what the iranians are doing against the israelis, you know, they have different different groups, what they call the axis of resistance. now, the axis of resistance is hamas in the gaza strip, hezbollah here in lebanon, they have the houthis in yemen. and you can also say that they have the regime of syria and bashar
4:44 pm
al-assad. you know, this is something that could really metastasize into a much wider war. and that's why we've been seeing this flurry of diplomacy throughout the entire region for the past several weeks, trying, as we've seen from several visits from diplomats from the united states, and really throughout the world, trying to get everybody to back down. but it really is a question of whether or not this war by the israelis is going to be actually escalating the situation or causing everybody to, you know, kind of take a face saving step back. and that is what we're waiting to see. all right, matt bradley will ask you to stand by there in beirut as we try to put the pieces together, what we know. i want to go back to the pentagon. our correspondent, courtney kube. courtney, there was a leak of a us leak of israeli intelligence data about how they would conduct a retaliatory strike. do we know? has that altered what they might be doing or how is it played a role in all of this? so u.s. officials have said that hasn't
4:45 pm
had any real impact on the situation here. and what's critical about those documents, lester, is they not only showed how the idf, the israeli military is postured for a possible response to iran, but they also showed the offensive and the defensive posture. so what was really important about those documents is they showed this sort of holistic look at how the israeli military was readying for this back and forth with iran. now we are learning a little bit more as this develops. there is at this point, there is no indication that the u.s. military was involved in this in any way. but that's one of the big questions we have. again, we're still trying to figure out what the targets were here. lester. courtney, qb again, we're watching this activity in in iran tonight. explosions reported likely a retaliatory strike by israel that concludes its nbc news special report. much more ahead on our streaming network nbc news now online at nbc news.com. and tonight on nbc nightly news, i'm lester holt in

new york. thank you for watching. and good evening. all right. back in our area, it is a giant boost for robotaxi compan. waymo just closed a $5.6 billion funding round. huge payoff for the company. but what does this mean for the future of autonomous drivers? let's bring in scott budman. scott, this is obviously a lot of money for the company. do they have plans yet on how they want to use it? they do. audrey, this is a big battle here in silicon valley for who is going to be able to take you and your food deliveries without a driver. and the autonomous world is really heating up. more than $5 billion for waymo. granted, they're already owned by google. so they have what is essentially a rich parent. so they have plenty of money to back them. but we see them as really expanding. the company says they're going to get to hire a lot of people. they're going to get to build out their cars and how this machinery works. right now, waymo is primarily in los angeles, here in the bay area and in certain
4:47 pm
places in arizona. they're going to expand more in california and texas. et cetera. they really want to be a concern that makes money. after all, they're owned by google. eventually they want to make money, but they need to expand the service. people like it. they do about 100,000 drives, driverless drives a wee. waymo does, but they need to do much more to make money. sure, i had to question that. that number. i was like billion with a b okay. it's a lot of money. you know, we've talked about this earlier this week. tesla just recently unveiled its robotaxi plan. so how does what does this mean for those competitors. it's really getting interesting. so waymo has the backing of google. and they've been doing this for years. they're really good at it. tesla is you know an $800 billion company. they have plenty of money in the bank as well. they have a whole bunch of cars that they've sold. they understand that part of it. the robotaxi a little bit new for them. so they're behind the curve there. but again, a lot of resources and a lot of technology. amazon owns a company called zoox. they are in the process of working on
4:48 pm
autonomous deliveries. so you have a lot of silicon valley money and a lot of silicon valley technology going towards getting people and things like food deliveries from point a to point b without a driver. does that put a lot of people out of work? yes, but a lot of these companies are hiring engineers and technicians and eventually drivers as well. this is a really, really labor intensive industry for now and technology intensive. and as 5 billion, like you said, off the top says a very, very expensive industry. so far, none of these companies are making money with the robotaxi. if at all. and by the way, uber and lyft are out there saying, hey, we make billions of dollars doing this and we can make even more if we don't have to pay drivers. so that could be in the future as well. got it. all right. thanks so much for that update, scott. appreciate it. well another canceled match for the san jose state women's volleyball team. the san jose spartans were supposed to play against the university of nevada wolf pack this weekend, but the
4:49 pm
wolf pack players backed out of the game. some of the players posted on x quote, we refuse to participate in any match that advances in justice against female athletes. all this comes after reports there is a transgender woman on the san jose spartans. the school has not confirmed that for other schools, including boise and utah state, have also canceled games against the spartans. this season. an apparent protest against the alleged transgender athlete. i'm here now with meteorologist vianey arana to take a look at our weather today and a lot of people looking forward to the weekend as well. we are, and it looks like it's our last day of warmth, above average temperatures. today. we're in the 70s and 80s right now. we've got a cool down and even rain chances for our weekend forecast. so if you like fall weather, i think the weekend forecast might be for you. you've likely already noticed the cloud cover, and if you look at the 24 hour temperature change, no major changes were a little bit cooler in san francisco. we do have some areas of fog lighting up further down through parts of
4:50 pm
half moon bay, but here's what's on tap. so as we inch into that saturday, sunday timeline, we're monitoring a system to our north. you can already see it up through parts of eureka. we've actually got two systems. these are not only going to bring a chance of some shower activity, they're also going to bring significant cooling to parts of the bay area. if you notice, it's right up here as that cold front passes through, we're also going to get a change in our winds as well. now let's take a look at your saturday forecast. as we edge into that 12:00 hour. we're going to be in the 60s and 70s daytime highs for the afternoon tomorrow will still be in the upper 70s now as this system approaches late saturday into early sunday, the temperature change is going to be a lot more noticeable heading into sunday. so we're talking about possibly a 10 to 15 degree difference in some spots as far as daytime highs. here's a look at what we could see for your sunday afternoon. we've got 60s through parts of dublin, fremont and oakland and then low 70s into parts of the south bay. even in the interior spots like concord 71, san francisco will
4:51 pm
be in the 60s timing right now does look like your saturday. the biggest impact you'll see there is going to be cloud cover, and if you look right up here, this is at around 10:00. we do start to see the approach of this system starting out in the north bay before moving southward. by the time that we get into that sunday morning time stamp right there, that's at about 130 notice, a lot of the emphasis is a little bit more towards the north bay, but judging by the timing of this, it does look like we could still see some of that shower activity spreading further down southward, even into parts of the south bay as well. so we're going to keep that in the forecast for sunday 67 degrees. you'll notice cooling in through monday as well as we continue to see that shower activity. also possibility of some snow for the sierra as well as that cold front passes through inland. temperatures are only going to be in the 70s. this weekend, so it will be much more fall like. and the overnight lows are going to be really cold starting on monday into tuesday. look at that. we're going to be seeing those temperatures dropping into the 40s, even into the interior, which we haven't seen in quite
4:52 pm
some time. but make sure to join me again at 5:00. i've got a closer look at the timing and potential totals coming up. i'll send it back to you. getting cooler out there for sure. all right. vianey. thank you. still to come? raj goes one on one with george kittle ahead of their big matchup on sunday night football. also, warriors have a new beat. t
